Terrace and balcony plants are usually kept in pots, but pots are a less suitable environment for plants than borders. Because pots only have a limited amount of room, there is a greater risk of water or nutrient deficiencies. So you need to take extra good care of plants in pots!
It all starts with the right soil...
Preferably use a compost with good water retention properties and enough nutrients to last six months. Although such high quality potting mixes are more expensive than standard composts, they are definitely value for money if you consider the added satisfaction your costly pot plants will give you.
Pots should always have good drainage. We recommend pouring a 3 to 4 cm layer of hydro pebbles in the bottom of the pot.
The right nutrients
Alongside the right soil, terrace and balcony plants also require a balanced diet of nutrients. Standard compost contains enough nutrients to last your plant about two months. After this period, the nutrients will need to be replenished with a suitable fertilizer. There are many different fertilizers available.
